Why Summer Is the Perfect Time Plan Your 2027 Vacation
Summer has a funny way of making next year feel very far away.
Between vacations, graduation parties, weekends at the lake and trying to remember which day it is, most people are not thinking about where they want to travel six months or a year from now. That is exactly why summer can be one of the best times to start planning.
While everyone else is focused on this summer, you have an opportunity to get ahead on holiday travel, spring break, cruises, Europe, Alaska and those bigger vacations that require more than a quick hotel search and a carry-on bag. Planning early does not necessarily mean paying for every part of the trip today. It means making thoughtful decisions before limited availability, school schedules and rising demand start making those decisions for you.
So, what trips should you be planning now?
Holiday Travel for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s
It may feel strange to think about Christmas while wearing flip-flops, but holiday travel should already be on your radar. Thanksgiving week, Christmas break and New Year’s are some of the most popular travel periods of the year. Families are often working with fixed school calendars, limited vacation days and very specific travel dates.
That means flexibility disappears quickly.
Summer is a good time to start planning:
Holiday cruises
Christmas market trips in Europe
All-inclusive resort vacations
Disney vacations
Multigenerational family trips
Warm-weather escapes during winter break
You may not need to purchase every flight immediately, but choosing the destination and reserving limited hotel, resort or cruise inventory can put you in a much better position.
Winter Escapes to the Caribbean and Mexico
By the time the first gray Ohio week arrives, everyone suddenly remembers that the Caribbean exists. That is usually when the rush begins.
Winter trips to Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, Jamaica, Aruba and other warm-weather destinations are worth planning now, particularly when you need:
A specific room category
Oceanfront accommodations
Connecting rooms
A family suite
A resort with a strong kids’ program
Adults-only accommodations
Nonstop or convenient flights
Popular resorts can technically have rooms available later while no longer having the room you actually want. There is a big difference between finding a room and finding the right resort, room category and flight schedule for your vacation. Starting during the summer gives you time to compare destinations instead of choosing from whatever is left when winter officially becomes unbearable.
Spring Break 2027
Spring break may be months away, but families usually have very little flexibility once the school calendar is set. When thousands of families are traveling during the same few weeks, the most desirable options can become limited quickly.
Now is a good time to begin planning spring break if you are considering:
An all-inclusive resort
A Caribbean cruise
Disney World or Universal Orlando
A family trip to Hawaii
A larger family vacation requiring multiple rooms
A destination with limited nonstop flights
Families needing suites, connecting rooms or space for five or more people should be especially proactive. Larger room configurations are usually much more limited than standard hotel rooms. Planning ahead also gives you time to decide what matters most. Is the priority a great beach, easy flights, excellent food, activities for teenagers or a resort where everyone can do their own thing?
Those details are so much more important than simply choosing the resort that looks good online.
Europe Travel for 2027
A customized Europe vacation is not usually something I recommend putting together at the last minute. Trips involving multiple cities, trains, private transfers, tours and carefully selected hotels have a lot of moving pieces. The earlier planning begins, the easier it is to create a trip that flows well instead of piecing together disconnected options.
Summer is an ideal time to begin discussing 2027 trips to destinations such as:
Italy
Greece
France
Spain
Portugal
Ireland
England and Scotland
Switzerland
Planning now is especially helpful when traveling during peak summer months or around a major event. It also gives you time to answer the bigger questions before booking:
Should you visit three cities or slow down and enjoy two?
Is traveling by train the best option?
Would a private transfer make more sense?
Do you really need to see every major city in Italy during one vacation?
For the record, probably not.
A well-planned Europe trip is not about squeezing the greatest number of places into the itinerary. It is about creating a trip that feels enjoyable while you are actually taking it.
Alaska Cruises and Cruisetours for 2027
Alaska is one of those destinations where choosing the right itinerary can matter just as much as choosing the cruise ship. Not every Alaska cruise visits the same glaciers or ports. Some sail round trip, while others travel one way between Alaska and Vancouver. Some can be paired with inland stays near Denali and other areas of Alaska.
Many 2027 and 2028 Alaska cruises are already available to book, including land-and-sea cruisetours.
Starting early provides more choices for:
Balcony staterooms
Suites
Connecting cabins
Preferred sailing dates
Northbound or southbound itineraries
Glacier-viewing routes
Cruise tours with specific lodges and lengths
Alaska cruise demand continues to be strong as cruising overall grows. Waiting does not always mean there will be no cruise available. It may mean compromising on the itinerary, cabin location or travel dates.
River Cruises for 2027 and Beyond
River cruising is another vacation style that rewards early planning. Unlike large ocean cruise ships, river cruise ships carry fewer passengers and offer a limited number of each stateroom category.
Popular itineraries include:
The Rhine River
The Danube River
France’s Rhône River
Portugal’s Douro River
Christmas market cruises
Longer European river journeys
Many 2027 river cruise dates are already available, and some cruise companies are booking even farther ahead into 2028.
Planning early is particularly important when you want a specific month, itinerary, stateroom location or travel dates that coordinate with friends. River cruises can also include very different experiences depending on the cruise line, so choosing one should involve more than comparing the starting price.
Summer 2027 Family Vacations
Yes, next summer already belongs on the list.
Summer travel becomes more complicated when multiple schedules are involved. Add grandparents, adult children, sports calendars or several families, and finding one week that works can feel like negotiating an international peace agreement.
Trips worth beginning now include:
European family vacations
Alaska cruises
Mediterranean cruises
Hawaii
National park vacations
Multigenerational trips
Family reunions at an all-inclusive resort
Large groups usually need more rooms, more cabin choices and more coordination. The earlier the conversation begins, the more likely the trip can be designed around the group instead of the group being forced to work around limited availability.
Milestone Trips, Honeymoons and Anniversary Vacations
Some vacations deserve more planning than “Where can we fly next month?” A honeymoon, anniversary, retirement trip, graduation celebration or milestone birthday often involves a larger budget and higher expectations.
Planning early gives you time to:
Establish a realistic budget
Compare destinations
Use travel rewards strategically
Coordinate vacation time
Choose the right accommodations
Plan memorable experiences
Make payments over time when available
You also do not need to know exactly where you want to go before starting. Sometimes the first step is deciding how you want the trip to feel.
Relaxing or adventurous?
Beach or Europe?
Cruise or land vacation?
Busy itinerary or absolutely no schedule beyond deciding where to eat dinner?
Those answers usually narrow the options much faster than choosing a destination from a list.
Planning Early Does Not Mean Booking Everything Early
This is an important distinction. Planning a vacation and purchasing every component are not always the same thing.
Airfare pricing changes constantly, and the ideal time to purchase flights varies by route, destination, season and travel dates. Current airfare data does not support one universal rule that buying flights as early as possible will always produce the lowest price. However, you can still begin planning the overall trip.
You may be able to reserve the cruise, resort, tour or hotel first and monitor flights once schedules are available.
A good travel plan considers both availability and value. Waiting for the lowest possible price is not particularly helpful when the room, itinerary or travel date you wanted is no longer available.
