Not All Travel Advisors are Created Equal

There. I said it.

And before anyone gets offended, let me clarify. There are many incredible travel advisors in this industry. Smart, experienced, connected, ethical professionals who work very hard for their clients. There are also people who signed up for something last Tuesday, made a cute social media graphic, and are now calling themselves travel experts. Those are not the same thing.

Travel planning has changed a lot. Anyone can go online and book a resort, a cruise, a tour, or a flight. That part is not hard. What is hard is knowing whether what you booked is actually the right fit for you. Because the internet will show you beautiful pictures. It will not tell you that the beach is rocky, the rooms in that building are dated, the “walkable location” is technically walkable if you enjoy sweating through your outfit, or that the resort everyone is talking about online is not actually a great match for the way you like to travel.

That is where a real travel advisor matters.

I’m Nikki, the travel advisor behind Travel by Nikki Vacations. I help people plan trips that feel effortless, personal, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish. My job is not just to book a vacation. My job is to help you avoid travel regret. And that takes more than a booking link.

It takes education, experience, industry relationships, and a network of trusted people who know what is happening on the ground. It takes continuing to learn, attending conferences, completing certifications, building supplier relationships, visiting properties, asking better questions, and knowing when something looks great online but may not be the best choice for you.

I have personally visited more than 50 resorts and hotels across multiple destinations. That matters. I know the difference between pretty marketing photos and the actual feel of a property. I pay attention to service, food, room categories, beach conditions, location, layout, who the resort is really best for, and who probably needs to keep looking.

I also invest heavily in my business and my education. I attend industry events and conferences, complete supplier and destination training, maintain professional certifications, and surround myself with experienced advisors who are generous with their knowledge. I am proudly affiliated with Travel with Awestruck, an award-winning agency with an incredible team, trusted supplier relationships, and additional support behind the scenes.

That means when you work with me, you are not just getting one person sitting at a laptop guessing based on reviews. You are getting my personal experience, my professional training, my relationships, and the collective knowledge of a network that works in travel every day.

I am also proud to have earned my Verified Travel Advisor designation through ASTA, one of the highest credentials in the travel advisor community. To me, that matters because travel is an investment. Your time, your money, your PTO, your family memories, your honeymoon, your milestone celebration, your once-in-a-while chance to actually relax. Those things deserve more than a hobby-level approach.

And yes, I know some people have had a bad experience with a “travel agent.”

Maybe they felt like they were sold something that was not right for them. Maybe communication was poor. Maybe once the trip was booked, the support disappeared. Maybe the person knew how to make a reservation but did not know how to really advise. I get it, but one bad experience does not mean using a travel advisor is a bad idea. It may just mean you did not have the right advisor.

A professional travel advisor should ask good questions. They should listen. They should explain options clearly. They should know when to say, “That probably is not the best fit for what you want.” They should help you understand the difference between price and value. They should advocate for you when something goes sideways. They should be there before, during, and after your trip.

That is how I work.

I help my clients choose the right destination, narrow down the best resorts or itineraries, understand what is worth upgrading, avoid common mistakes, and feel prepared before they ever leave home. I help with the details you may not even know to ask about, like transfer logistics, room categories, excursion timing, inter-island flights, cruise options, local support, and what to do on your own versus what is absolutely worth having arranged in advance. And while I cannot control the weather, airline delays, or the occasional travel curveball, I can make sure you are not handling everything alone.

That is the difference.

A booking site gives you options.

A hobbyist might give you a link.

A professional travel advisor gives you strategy, guidance, advocacy, and support.

So if you have tried working with a travel agent before and it did not feel valuable, I would encourage you to try again. The right advisor can completely change the way you travel. When you are ready to plan something that feels personal, thoughtful, and well-matched to you, I would love to help.

Because your vacation should feel like a vacation.

Not a group project with the internet.
